Rear Admiral (RADM) David F. Baucom served in the U.S. Navy and was the Director for strategy, policy, capabilities, and logistics for the U.S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base in St. Clair County, Illinois. His work in the Navy required David Baucom to become a seasoned traveler, and during his service he traversed much of the globe. His international ventures included a trip to Sydney, Australia, where he visited the Taronga Zoo. The zoo engages multiple conservation programs, such as the Taronga Conservation Science Initiative.
Founded by Taronga Foundation executive patron Gretel Packer, the Taronga Conservation Science Initiative focus on advancing conservation science. Its work encompasses several ecological areas including marine ecology, wildlife health, population variety, and terrestrial ecology. Conservation efforts also consider animal welfare and incorporate living organisms such as the Great Barrier Reef.
Partnerships between Taronga scientists and other scientific agencies and groups bring a multidisciplinary approach to conservation science, enabling them to address a range of environmental questions. The collaborative work performed through the initiative also facilitates the making of informed decisions regarding wildlife and habitat management.
